Now comes the predictable political aftermath of tragedy: More than 20 Republican governors hysterically scramble to slam the door in the faces of war refugees. Republican presidential candidates hysterically exhort us to be afraid — be very afraid — of immigrants, and they scramble to top each other in proving who hates Muslims more.
Which, of course, is exactly the kind of hysteria and ugly xenophobia the terrorists want, showing the world our worst face.
They know it works: George Bush’s decision to turn 9/11 into a pretext to invade Iraq gave terrorists the biggest recruiting tool they ever had and led directly to the current situation.
Stop the madness. Stop voting for Republicans.
