In letters: Tribune should stop amplifying anti-Diablo voices | Opinion
Proud member of Diablo 2045
The SLO Tribune remains an amplifier for voices of those opposed to the continued safe operation of Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP). Your July 1, 2026, editorial, “Why SLO County should not be a cheerleader for Diablo Canyon and PG&E,” is no exception. The headline uncritically repeats an opposition talking point.
As an advocate for extended DCPP operations well beyond 2045, I wish that the SLO Tribune offered clear evidence of their bold assertion that “approval is practically in the bag.”
Sacramento-based opposition remains from state Sen. John Laird and Assemblymember Dawn Addis. Locally, the label “unrelenting critic” for Supervisor Dr. Bruce Gibson, whose Ph.D. is in oil exploration geology, seems spot-on.

CGNP (Californians for Green Nuclear Power) rebuts the appeals to emotion advanced by DCPP opponents with factual arguments. As an intervenor serving the public interest, we’ve filed thousands of pages of written testimony before regulatory and oversight bodies like the CPUC. We write letters to the editor and op-eds. CGNP’s GreenNUKE Substack now includes over 50 fact-packed articles. Since 2017, we have operated a booth at the SLO Downtown Farmer’s Market to answer questions from the public. We are not funded by PG&E.
CGNP proudly joined the Diablo Canyon 2045 coalition. We will be a supporter of legislation in Sacramento to extend Diablo Canyon operations to 2045. Furthermore, we are grateful the county of San Luis Obispo has joined the coalition.

Soak up some culture — at no cost
I feel extraordinarily fortunate to live in a community with DeyoDANCES, a professional contemporary dance company creating ambitious work here at home. Founder Lisa Deyo brings exceptional talent as both choreographer and producer—and the generosity to make this art accessible to everyone.
On Saturday, July 18, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m., DeyoDANCES will present three works at Cal Poly’s Spanos Theatre, including the world premiere of “Ro-Sham-Beau.” Professional dancers from SLO, San Diego and New York will perform, followed by a Q&A with Lisa and the company.
Admission is free. At a time when cost can prevent families and newcomers from experiencing live performance, Lisa is removing that barrier. I hope our community fills the theater, celebrates this remarkable local resource and reserves seats at DeyoDances.com

Stop the rants!
Mr. Clive Pinder’s latest column certainly takes up a lot of paper and tells us what?
California votes democratic for several reasons.
First, in a democratic society the person scoring the highest vote count is the winner. Yet for some reason Pinder seems to ignore the reality of the popular vote.
Second, he throws out old tropes such as labor union domination, ballot manipulation, our election of a “king” for governor and other well-worn-out conservative talking points. In psychology this is called projection.
Our unions are what helped to create the middle class and the demise of these organizations has, in part, led to vast disparities in wealth and what appears to be a country now controlled and run by oligarchs.
Finally, Pinder concludes that if things don’t change, we will have to throw the bums out. I think we have and that is why this state is the most successful in the country.
Lastly, what we need is not sore losers’ long-winded rants but constructive ideas we can all agree on.
