Dave Ekbom’s letter “Oceano Dunes are a major tourist attraction,” Sept. 21, is all fine and good. Everyone should be able to enjoy this beautiful area we live in, including the Oceano Dunes, however we choose.
When he references the OHV park, however, I have a problem. Calling it a “safe and fun place to recreate with our friends and families” is just not true. It may be fun for some, but safe? I don’t think so.
The few times I’ve walked the beach toward the OHV park, I was practically run over by trucks speeding by me left and right. Many reports of ATV enthusiast deaths on the dunes, plus complaints of dirty air emanating from the recreational area, contribute to its unsafe and unhealthy nature.
Mr. Ekbom ends his letter with a message to those opposed to the OHV. “May they find the peace and recreation they need without destroying ours,” he says. The problem with that statement is that the ATV enthusiasts are enjoying their form of recreation at the expense of nature lovers and others who would prefer to enjoy the dunes just as God created them … and safely.
