SLO rental petition’s impact is clear: It would end discrimination

Nick Wilson’s detailed article about the people’s initiative petition to repeal and replace San Luis Obispo’s rental inspection ordinance reports that “it’s unclear how the proposed” replacement nondiscrimination-in-housing “ordinance could impact … city policies related to housing, in addition to the Rental Housing Inspection program.”

It is actually quite clear. Discrimination against people based on a person’s status will be ended in city housing programs, policies and intrusions. The public opposes discrimination against people based on status as a renter, owner, sexual identity, ethnicity, race, gender, disability, income or age. The initiative measure will end that discrimination in city policies and programs.

Impact? Foreclosing discrimination in housing policies will make us all better neighbors and rebuild public confidence.

Stew Jenkins, San Luis Obispo
