A few ideas to help spruce up Arroyo Grande Cemetery

I read the lengthy article on the Arroyo Grande Cemetery, (“Dry, dusty cemetery not a peaceful resting place, angry Arroyo Grande residents say,” Oct. 29).

Certainly dead grass is unsightly and gophers are a problem, but more disturbing are the complaints.

There are solutions:

1. Give a local Scout troop permission to shoot the gophers with BB or pellet guns and haul away the carcasses.

2. Capture the feral cats out at the rock in Morro Bay and let them loose in the cemetery; gophers are a great food source.

As for the dead grass, one idea comes to mind: Local philanthropic organizations might adopt a section and relandscape with rock or recycled products. Let them donate the cost and the labor.

The cemetery manager and grounds crew have done a marvelous job over the years, and their cooperation and concern was most evident when the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society photographed all of the headstones in the cemetery.

I understand that visitors to the cemetery might be upset, but isn’t it better to remember our loved ones through active memories rather than just visiting a spot where their earthly remains rest?

Martha A. Crosley Graham, former project chairperson for the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society, Los Osos
