I was surprised and saddened hearing that Cal Poly is now officially a “wet campus,” meaning that alcohol will be sold at the campus “pub,” Mustang Station (“Cal Poly students can now grab a beer on campus,” Oct. 11).

So many of our youths, yes youths, freshman and sophomores only 18, 19 and 20, and thus not of legal age to drink, occupy the campus.

I realize that alcohol can be purchased and brought onto campus, but why make it so easy by selling it in that “pub” setting while classes are still in session?

Alcohol addiction is rampant in our country — as we read about so many of our children losing their lives to “binge drinking” and a host of other alcohol- and drug-related deaths, which are of epidemic proportions. I believe we are supposed to protect our children during their very vulnerable years. Are we really doing that by making alcohol so readily obtainable on campus?
