Developer doesn’t care about the character of Cayucos
It’s baaaaack!
It’s been 7 years since the Coastal Commission determined that the proposed subdivision project called “Cayucos del Mar,” to be located on the corner of Old Creek Rd. and Hwy 1, was appealable. On Nov. 4, 2009, a unanimous decision was reached over substantial issues related to the project. They were primarily related to overall mass and scale of the development in relationship to neighborhood compatibility, parking concerns and unclear hotel operational standards. The applicant, Franco DeCicco, sued the commission over its decision and the Coastal Commission ultimately prevailed.
Now, the applicant is bringing the project to a de novo hearing for consideration and action on Sept. 9 in Newport Beach. Some revisions have been made to help “soften” the impact of the development in the residential neighborhood. However, the overall size, mass and footprint have not changed. It will still be 64,000 square feet, 3 stories tall and all connected; the 18-room hotel and 4 condominiums.
Does this proposed project, which will be the largest in all of Cayucos, fit the character of the small residential neighborhood? Certainly not. But you have to ask another question: Does the developer care?
