Ending Cuba embargo will help transform it into a more open society
So, Bill Craig thinks that President Obama should have left Cuba after the terrorist attack in Belgium (“President Obama should stay in Cuba if he loves it so much,” March 25). First of all, while what happened in Brussels was terrible, it was relatively small, and unfortunately, we live in a time when across the world such attacks are all too common. Belgium is a close ally, but does that mean attacks in Africa and Asia are no less awful?
Mr. Craig also questions the president being in a country that doesn’t share our values. By this logic, FDR shouldn’t have gone to Yalta and Richard Nixon shouldn’t have gone to China.
Actually, ending the trade embargo with Cuba will probably help transform it into a more open society. The leaders may still be mired in Marxist ideas, but the Cuban people will welcome both U.S. goods and tourist dollars.
