SLO County warns of flash floods as rain storm approaches: ‘No area is immune’
Low-lying areas of San Luis Obispo County are vulnerable to flooding over the next few days as a rain storm slams into the Central Coast, according to the San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services.
“Now that the ground has saturated, low lying areas especially near creeks and streams have the potential for increased flooding as the rain continues,” the agency said in a news release Thursday.
The Office of Emergency Services noted that water levels in small streams and riverbeds can rise quickly during heavy rainfall.
“Heavy rains can result in flash flooding that can inundate cars and cause considerable damage,” the agency said, adding that “no area is immune to flash flooding, including urban areas.”
Residents living in areas prone to flooding, such as near the Oceano Lagoon, should “obtain sandbags, create an evacuation plan for their family and pets, and stay tuned to a local radio or television for storm updates and emergency information,” the county said.
Rain showers are expected to soak SLO County on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with wet weather returning to the region on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
