Heavy rain, thunderstorms to hit SLO County. Here’s when showers will start

Another intense storm system is expected to soak San Luis Obispo County, possibly bringing flooding, thunderstorms and severe weather over President’s Day weekend.

The storm is forecast to start Sunday, Feb. 15, with the most rain landing on Monday, Feb. 16.

It brings the “potential for heavy precipitation with flooding and mountain snow, thunderstorms, strong winds, as well as marine and beach hazards,” according to the National Weather Service’s forecast discussion.

National Weather Service meteorologist David Gomberg said SLO County will experience an “extended period of wet weather” from Sunday through Wednesday, Feb. 18, with the potential for up to 3 inches of rain in most areas and possibly double that in the foothills and more mountainous regions.

He said the storm has a “vigorous energy” that could pose hazardous threats, including damaging winds, high surf and coastal flooding.

Gomberg urged local residents to check up-to-date forecasts and “keep an eye to the sky” while the storm is underway.
