Sunny weather arrives in SLO County — just in time for summer. See the forecast
San Luis Obispo County is in for warm, sunny weather during the first official week of the summer.
On Sunday, a pattern of fresh-to-strong (19 to 31 mph) northwesterly winds will develop in the afternoon and decrease during the night and morning in the coastal regions.
The northwesterly winds in the afternoon are expected to increase to strong to gale-force (25 to 38 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph) levels from Monday to Sunday.
These winds will mix out the temperature inversion layer, leaving behind mostly clear skies during the late morning and afternoon along the coastline.
Marine low clouds are expected to redevelop along the coastal regions in the evening, extending inland with areas of fog and mist during the night and early morning. In the inland and coastal valleys, these stratus clouds will rapidly retreat to the coastline later in the morning.
This classic late spring/early summer weather pattern will persist through next week, culminating with the arrival of summer on Friday — the summer solstice and the longest day of the year.
Seasonal temperatures are expected this week.
Inland valleys like Paso Robles will warm into the high 80s and low 90s, while coastal valleys such as San Luis Obispo will range between the high 70s and low 80s.
Most beaches will see highs in the high 50s to low 60s, though southerly-facing beaches like Cayucos, Avila Beach and Shell Beach could climb into the mid-70s thanks to downslope winds.
Looking further ahead, long-range models indicate that dry conditions will continue through the end of June.
Surf report
Gale-force, northwesterly winds along the California coastline will generate a 6- to 8-foot northwesterly (305-degree, deep water) sea and swell (with a 5- to 9-second period) on Saturday and Sunday, increasing to 7- to 9-feet with the same period from Monday to Sunday.
A 1- to 3-foot southern hemisphere (200-degree, deep water) swell (with a 15- to 17- second period) will arrive along our coastline on Sunday and will remain at this level through Tuesday, gradually fading away on Wednesday.
Surface seawater temperatures will range between 49 and 52 degrees through next Sunday.
