SLO County could hit 100s this week — excessive heat watch issued

Parts of San Luis Obispo County could see temperatures above 100 degrees as a heat wave settles over the region this week.

On Monday, the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch for San Luis Obispo County interior valleys, warning of “dangerously hot conditions with temperatures up to 104 possible.”

The watch includes the areas of Shandon and Creston, as well as further east toward the Carrizo Plain. It will be in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening.

Paso Robles is expected to hit 100, while San Luis Obispo could hit a high of 86.

The watch comes as a hot weather pattern is expected to develop across much of interior Southern California, bringing “temperatures much above normal for this time of year,” according to the Service’s daily forecast discussion.

In San Luis Obispo County’s interior valleys, that could translate to temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees above normal.

Temperatures closer to the coast are expected to be more mild due to morning low clouds and fog, according to the Weather Service’s forecast. There temperatures will range from the mid-70s to the mid-80s.

The heat watch warned that heat-related illnesses can increase significantly during extreme heat events and urged people to drink fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of the sun. It also recommended people check up on relatives and neighbors.
