Up to 20-foot waves could slam SLO County during storm. Here’s when

Along with some potentially heavy rain, more big waves and even possible flooding are in the forecast for San Luis Obispo County this weekend, according to a news release put out by the National Weather Service.

The NWS warned that beaches along the Central Coast could see breaking waves reaching up to 15-20 feet, along with dangerous rip currents.

A high surf advisory will be in effect from 6 a.m. Saturday to 10 p.m. Tuesday, with the strongest waves hitting the south- and southwest-facing beaches at night, according to the NWS.

The NWS also issued a coastal flooding warning, although it stipulated that damage to structures from potential flooding will probably not be significant. The NWS added “vulnerable low-lying coastal areas such as parking lots, beaches and walkways” will likely see flooding.

The coastal flooding advisory will be in effect from 5 a.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Tuesday, with the highest potential flooding occurring every morning.

The NWS urged residents to secure flood-prone property and to avoid beaches during the advisory.

The agency also previously issued a flood watch for San Luis Obispo County, with that expected to expire Wednesday.

Moderate-to-heavy showers and thunder storms are forecast to drop 2 to 5 inches of rain on lower elevations and 4 to 8 inches of rain on foothill and mountain areas, the Weather Service said in its forecast this week.

Rain was expected to start falling Saturday evening and continue intermittently through Tuesday. There was a slight chance of rain Wednesday as well.
