SLO County pier reopens after atmospheric river storm damaged structure
The Cayucos Pier reopened Friday after being closed to the public due to damage caused by persistent storms in San Luis Obispo County.
The pier was initially closed Feb. 6 following recent atmospheric river storms that produced high winds and heavy rains and flooding.
“Cal Fire crews noticed some damage to the pier from the storm system that moved through over the weekend,” county spokeswoman Jeanette Trompeter told The Tribune by email Wednesday.
Other San Luis Obispo County beaches also closed their piers through the intense storms, including Pismo Beach.
According to a Facebook post from the County of San Luis Obispo Government, the pier was examined by an engineer prior to its reopening and the engineer deemed it safe for reopening.
However, there are new limitations with the reopening.
First, the pier will be subject to weekly observation by an engineer or San Luis Obispo County Parks and Recreation staff. The pier will also be closed during high swell conditions.
“So, until we get more stormy weather, locals can now once again enjoy this popular community gathering place,” the post read. “We appreciate everyone’s adherence to the closure signs and restrictions as we worked to ensure the safety of the pier.”
The Cayucos Pier was renovated and rebuilt between 2013 and 2015. The project cost $3.5 million.
