High surf advisory issued for SLO County: Beaches could see up to 14-foot waves this week

San Luis Obispo County beaches could see some major waves this week.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for Central Coast beaches through Friday morning, warning of large breaking waves of 8 to 11 feet.

Those could build to between 10 and 14 feet Tuesday night into Wednesday, the advisory said.

They will also likely be accompanied by “dangerous rip currents.”

The NWS said the waves will be highest across west- and northwest-facing beaches, which would include areas like Morro Strand, Cayucos, Pismo Beach and Oceano Dunes.

During the weather event, conditions create an increased risk for ocean drownings, the NWS warned, and “large breaking waves could cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks and capsize small boats near shore.”

The advisory is expected to expire Friday at 3 a.m.
