Avila Beach in San Luis Obispo County, California, was crowded on Sunday, Aug. 16, as a statewide heat wave hit causing temperatures to soar.

After a week of scorching heat, San Luis Obispo County can expect some relief thanks to a sudden cool-down, according to the National Weather Service.

On Tuesday, a heat advisory was in effect in much of inland and northern SLO County through 8 p.m., the NWS posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, with temperatures expected to reach the triple digits.

San Luis Obispo will peak at 90 degrees on Wednesday, with clear skies and an overnight low of 58.

After that, however, temperatures will ease dramatically.

On Thursday and Friday, highs in SLO will fall to 79 and 72 degrees respectively, and the North County will also see a rapid drop into the 70s.

Temperatures in San Luis Obispo are expected to hold steady at 72 degrees on Saturday, the NWS forecast said.

High temperatures will drop quickly in Paso Robles

The transition will be most noticeable in Paso Robles, where highs will fall nearly 25 degrees in a matter of days, according to the NWS.

After temperatures peak at 102 on Tuesday and 101 on Wednesday, Thursday will see a high of 88 degrees, and Friday and Saturday will see highs as low as 78, according to the NWS.

Skies in Paso Robles are expected to stay clear during the day and overnight throughout the rest of the week, the forecast said.

Atascadero, which is also under the heat advisory, will see highs of 99 degrees Tuesday, 100 on Wednesday, 86 on Thursday, 75 on Friday and 75 on Saturday, the NWS forecast said.

Overnight lows in Atascadero are expected to hover in the mid-50s all week, with little wind and clear skies.

Temperatures in Templeton — also under the heat advisory — will peak at 98 degrees on Tuesday, 100 on Wednesday, 86 on Thursday, 75 on Friday and 75 on Saturday, with clear skies and overnight lows in the mid-50s, the NWS forecast said.

Milder temperatures on the SLO County coast

San Luis Obispo County’s coastal cities will experience far milder weather with a less dramatic shift.

On the North Coast, Morro Bay was expected to peak at 74 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday before temperatures fall to 66 on Thursday and 61 on Friday and Saturday.

Fog is also expected between 11 p.m. and 11 a.m. through the week in Morro Bay, the Weather Service said.

In the South County, temperatures were not expected to pass 90 degrees.

Pismo Beach will see a high of 74 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, 66 on Thursday, 64 on Friday and 65 on Saturday, according to the NWS forecast.

Fog is expected between Thursday and Saturday morning, keeping temperatures low, the forecast said.

Nearby, Grover Beach will see lower temperatures, peaking at 74 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday with clear skies before patchy fog lowers temperatures to 66 degrees on Thursday, 64 degrees on Friday and 65 degrees on Saturday, the forecast said.

Farther inland, Arroyo Grande will see highs of 82 degrees on Tuesday, 83 on Wednesday, 73 on Thursday, 68 on Friday and 69 on Saturday, with sun giving way to fog Wednesday evening, the NWS forecast said.

Advice for heat advisory

For inland communities under the heat advisory, the Weather Service recommended checking vehicles for children, the elderly and pets, and urged residents to reduce heat exposure.

People living in affected areas should also stay hydrated, be careful with possible fire ignition sources and should report any wildfires to the authorities, the NWS advisory said.
