New Year’s Eve storm drenches SLO County. Here’s how much rain fell in your town

A powerful storm on New Year’s Eve finished 2022 with a splash as most of San Luis Obispo County received at least an inch of rain.

At some points Saturday, the National Weather Service predicted as much as three-quarters of an inch of rain could fall in an hour.

That led to heavy runoff and localized flooding, along with a sewage leak and the closure of Highway 1 to Big Sur due to rock slides.

The county received a break in the wet weather on Sunday, but more rain is expected this week, starting Monday afternoon.

Here’s a look at how much rain fell in communities across SLO County over the 24 hours ending at 11 a.m. Sunday, according to the county’s Public Works Department:

  • Rocky Butte, 3.23 inches
  • Santa Margarita Lake, 2.44
  • San Luis Obispo, 2.52
  • Lopez Lake, 1.99
  • Santa Margarita, 1.93
  • Templeton, 1.46
  • Arroyo Grande, 1.58
  • Atascadero, 1.3
  • Nipomo, 1.3
  • Oceano, 1.14
  • Cambria, 1.04
  • Los Osos, 1.03
