Traveling to Southern California today? Storm closes Grapevine, other highways
The Caltrans map of Southern California roads looks like a mass of emergency orange and red caution icons Thursday, thanks to intense winter storms shutting down roads and impacting traffic flow throughout the bottom half of the state.
Though SLO County is now seeing overcast but dry conditions with only a few remaining impacts of last week’s storm, the southern portion of the state is experiencing extreme inclement winter weather.
A number of weather advisories were in place Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
These included flood advisories along Highway 1 near Malibu and Highway 58 near Edwards Air Force Base; flash flood watches for the Los Angeles County Mountains, Antelope Valley and San Gabriel Valley; and snow warnings for the Los Angeles County and Ventura County mountains and much of Central California.
The winter weather is expected to leave the area by Friday.
Here’s a quick look at which roads are partially or fully closed throughout Southern California as of Thursday afternoon.
- Highway 33 from Lockwood Valley Road to Wheeler Gorge between Ventucopa and Ojai is closed due to weather conditions.
- Northbound Highway 1 closed at Puerco Canyon Road near Malibu due to mudslide.
- Interstate 5 is closed at Grapevine Under-Crossing due to snow and icy conditions. According to Caltrans, the closure is expected to be lifted around 2 p.m.
- Highway 2, AKA Angeles Crest Highway, is closed outside of Los Angeles between Islip Saddle and State Route 39 due to emergency work. There is no estimated time of reopening.
- Highway 189 near Lake Arrowhead is shut down between Lake Gregory Drive and Blue Jay Cutoff due to emergency work. There is no estimated time of reopening.
- Highway 18 north of San Bernardino is closed between Bonnie Canyon and Old Waterman Canyon Road due to emergency work. There is no estimated time of reopening.
There are a number of other ramp and smaller road closures throughout the region, so make sure to check Caltrans for the latest conditions.
