SLO County will see hazardous beach conditions this weekend. Here’s what to expect
San Luis Obispo County beachgoers should be on the lookout this weekend for high tides, dangerous waves and currents that will impact coastal areas.
The National Weather Service on Friday issued a beach hazards statement for San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties warning of hazardous coastal conditions from 11 a.m. Friday through Sunday morning.
The agency predicts “abnormally high tides of 7.2 to 7.3 feet” that could cause sea water pooling in beach and harbor areas, as well as enhanced beach erosion, the statement said.
“A Beach Hazards Statement is issued when threats such as rip currents, longshore currents, sneaker waves and other hazards create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone,” the statement said.
PG&E meteorologist John Lindsey wrote about the annual king tides coming to the county’s coastline in his Nov. 29 Weather Watch column.
Lindsey said that the high tide is predicted to reach 7 feet at the Port San Luis tide gauge near Avila Beach by 8:54 a.m. on Saturday.
“This is one of the highest predicted tides at that San Luis Obispo County spot since Jan. 10, 2005,” Lindsey wrote.
