SLO County weather forecast for the week of Sept. 13: Winds will help clear smoke

This week will see the return of a more normal September weather pattern.

Smoke will gradually, slowly thin across the Central Coast as moderate to fresh (13 to 24 mph) northwesterly winds coming off the Pacific develop along the coastline during the afternoon on Sunday through Tuesday. These (onshore) winds will also produce a persistent marine layer with areas of night and morning drizzle and fog with little afternoon clearing in the coastal regions.

Over this period, high temperatures will range between the mid- to high 80s in the North County (Paso Robles) and mid- to high 70s in the coastal valleys (San Luis Obispo). The beaches will range between the high 50s to the low 60s.

On Wednesday through Friday, fresh to strong (19 to 31 mph) afternoon northwesterly winds and much less smoke will allow for much more clearing and blue skies; however, night and morning drizzle and fog will continue to develop in the coastal regions.

Temperatures will be slightly warmer than what we have seen the past few days due in part to a ridge of high pressure that will slowly build across our region.

Luckily, no extreme temperatures are expected during this time since the ridge of high pressure will not have a lot of time to build across the Central Coast. This ridge will be forced eastward as a large trough of low pressure sets up off the West Coast by mid-week. This area of low pressure will move onshore by Wednesday across the Pacific Northwest and parts of Northern California. The models are indicating a chance of early season rain showers across Oregon and parts of Northern California over this period.

Along the Central Coast, strong to gale-force (25 to 38 mph) northwesterly winds could develop by next weekend, which will produce much more clearing and warmer temperatures.

Surf report

Northwesterly winds off the California Coastline will generate a 2- to 4-foot northwesterly (310-degree, deep-water) sea and swell (with a 5- to 15-second period) on Sunday through Thursday, increasing to 4 to 6 feet (with a 5- to 11-second period) on Friday through next Sunday.

Seawater temperatures will range between 57 and 60 degrees through Tuesday, decreasing to 55 to 58 degrees on Wednesday. Seawater temperatures will further lower to 54 and 57 degrees on Thursday into next Sunday.
