SLO County weather forecast for the week of Aug. 16: Triple-digit weather coming

Unlike last week’s typical Central Coast weather pattern, this week’s weather will be anything but normal.

High pressure over the Desert Southwest will continue to strengthen and move toward California this weekend and remain in place through this upcoming week. This condition will produce an extreme heat event for the inland areas and a few of the coastal valleys. To make it feel more uncomfortable, an upper-level low-pressure system about 750 miles southwest of the Central Coast will continue to entrain subtropical moisture and send it northward into California.

Paso Robles is expected to hit 105 degrees on Sunday, while San Luis Obispo will reach 93 degrees. The beaches will range between the high 70s and mid-80s. Monsoonal moisture with widespread clouds and a chance of scattered rain showers and thunderstorms develop throughout the Central Coast on Sunday.

Later Monday, the skies will become less cloudy and temperatures will rise in the inland and coastal valleys. Paso Robles is forecast to reach 111 degrees on Monday and 115 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday. If these temperatures develop, they will break daily high records. The all-time high in Paso Robles is 115 degrees set back on July 20, 1960 and again on September 2, 2017. San Luis Obispo will reach the mid to high 90s over this time frame which will also break daily high records. The record highs for San Luis Obispo is as follows: Tuesday 94 degrees set in 1962, Wednesday 97 set in 1984, Thursday 94 1963.

Along the beaches, fresh to strong (19 to 31 mph) northwesterly winds will keep high temperatures in the 70s. However, monsoonal moisture will keep the marine layer to a minimum through the middle part of the upcoming week.
