SLO weather forecast for the week of Dec. 23: Rain, snow and wind
A vigorous cold front will pass through the Central Coast on Sunday morning with strong to gale-force (25 to 38 mph) southerly winds and moderate to heavy rain.
The winds will decrease and shift out of the northwest and the rain will turn to scattered showers Sunday afternoon and night. At this time, between 0.50 and 1.25 inches of precipitation is expected.
Moderate to fresh (13 to 24 mph) Santa Lucia winds, partly cloudy skies, morning dense ground fog in the valleys, cool temperatures and a slight chance of rain showers are expected on Monday.
Increasing northwesterly winds and clouds are forecast on Tuesday.
An intensifying cold front will move through the Central Coast on Christmas into Thursday. This system will produce strong to gale-force (25 to 38 mph) southerly winds and between 1.50 and 3 inches of rain.
Snow levels could drop to 3,000 feet.
Wet and unsettled weather could continue at times through the remainder of the week although details are very unclear as longer-range forecast models are in very poor agreement.
Surf report
An 8- to 10-foot northwesterly (295-degree, deep-water) swell with a 11- to 14-second period is forecast on Sunday. Combined with Sunday morning’s northwesterly swell will be 4- to 6-foot southerly (195-degree, shallow-water) seas.
A 5- to 7-foot northwesterly (295-degree, deep-water) swell with an 8- to 12-second period is forecast along our coastline Monday, increasing to 6 to 8 feet with the same period by Tuesday.
An 8- to 10-foot northwesterly (305-degree, deep-water) swell with an 18- to 20-second period is forecast to arrive along our coastline later Wednesday, increasing to 10 to 12 feet with a 15- to 17-second period on Thursday and Friday.
The long-range models are indicating a higher-energy Gulf of Alaska swell is expected to arrive along our coastline on Dec. 28.
Seawater temperatures will range from 54 and 57 degrees on Monday through Friday.
