Sinkhole closes both directions of Interstate 5 in Central Valley
The California Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 5 in both directions south of Tracy due to a sinkhole that was discovered Tuesday.
Crews performing routine maintenance found the sinkhole on the shoulder of the highway. Caltrans closed northbound I-5 at noon Tuesday to investigate the problem and undertake repairs. The agency announced Wednesday evening that southbound I-5 has been closed as well for inspection of the roadway. The highway is expected to reopen at 5 p.m. Friday.
Caltrans said signs are in place directing motorists to detours. Northbound traffic is being diverted to eastbound Highway 132 then northbound on Highway 33 back to I-5.
