SLO County favored a Republican for CA governor in primary. See results so far
San Luis Obispo County had the chance to vote for the state’s top leader on Tuesday — and so far, a Republican gubernatorial candidate has garnered the most votes at both the local and statewide level.
Steve Hilton, a conservative former Fox News host, was leading California’s governor race with 27.5% of the vote as of 7:44 p.m. Thursday, according to the Secretary of State’s office. Democrat Xavier Becerra was close behind with 26%, followed by Democrat billionaire Tom Steyer sitting in third with 20.2% of the vote.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican, had nabbed 11.1% of votes across the state, while Democrats Katie Porter and Matt Mahan were sitting in distant fifth and sixth slots with 4.5% and 4% of votes, respectively.
The top two vote-getters will advance to the Nov. 3 general election.
Results will continue to shift as more mail-in ballots are counted in the coming weeks. All election results will be certified by July 10, according to the Secretary of State’s office.

San Luis Obispo County also leaned toward Hilton, who was leading among local voters with 30.7% of the vote, as of 3:54 p.m. Thursday.
Locally, Becerra had earned 22.5% of the vote, while Steyer and Bianco were sitting at 19% and 13.9% of the vote, respectively. Porter was in fifth with 4.6%, and Mahan was close behind with 3.9% of the vote among SLO County voters.
As of Thursday afternoon, voter turnout remained low with approximately 25.1% of ballots submitted.
The deadline for county elections officials to certify election results is July 2.
