Supervisor Bruce Gibson endorsed local business leader Jim Dantona to take over his seat on the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors.

Dantona, CEO of the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce, launched his campaign for the District 2 seat after Gibson announced he would not run for reelection in 2026. Like Gibson before him, Dantona started his career in public service career on the Cayucos Advisory Council.

Dantona announced his endorsement from the outgoing supervisor in a news release on Monday. He is facing Michael Erin Woody, a civil engineer in Morro Bay, for the District 2 seat.

“Jim Dantona is a leader,” Gibson said in the release. “Jim is a really smart guy and he knows how government should work to provide the public safety, programs and services our county and its residents need.” Gibson’s remarks continued: “He’s the right person for the job because he will get stuff done and cut through the ideological noise. Commitment to getting results is the hallmark of the great county supervisors I’ve known over the years. Especially in these deeply troubling times — where chaos and cruelty rain down from a deranged presidency, when our democracy is under relentless attack — we’re lucky to have quality local citizens like Jim step up and defend our values.”

Dantona in return expressed his gratitude for the long-serving supervisor.

“Supervisor Gibson has spent the last 20 years fighting on behalf of North Coast residents, and I am honored to have his support in this important race,” Dantona said in the release. “I believe we need somebody representing us who embodies the same Central Coast values as Supervisor Gibson.

“As our next supervisor, I will continue the fight against threats coming from Big Oil and their allies in the White House,” he said. “We cannot allow a Donald Trump acolyte to represent our community on the Board of Supervisors.”
