SLO County school bonds see mixed election results so far
Voters across three San Luis Obispo County school districts were tasked with approving or rejecting multimillion-dollar bond measures Tuesday — and the bonds have seen mixed results according to the count so far.
General obligation bonds need 55% of the vote to pass.
According to the latest election results released at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, a $143.2 million bond in Lucia Mar — which would fund the removal of lead and asbestos from school facilities — was failing with 53.3% of the vote.
Templeton’s $52.3 million bond meant to support career technical education and facilities had 54.8% of the vote, landing just shy of the required 55% threshold.
“We’re remaining hopeful that maybe something will change, but it may not,” said Templeton superintendent Edd Bond.
If the bond is approved, Bond said, it will “present a great opportunity for, I’d say, some much-needed improvement at some of our campuses.” If not, the district will need to reevaluate, Bond said.
Only Atascadero’s $110 million bond was above the threshold for approval, but it was hanging on by a thread with 55.4% of the vote. The bond would fund career technical and STEM education in the district.
The vote totals so far include ballots received by the weekend before Election Day and those cast in person on Tuesday. Many more remain outstanding and will be tallied in the coming days.
District officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
