Grover Beach: See latest results for mayor, City Council, recall and water rates measure
Kassi Dee held onto an early lead in the race for Grover Beach mayor Tuesday night, while Kathy McCorry gained a narrow lead in the District 2 City Council race.
Meanwhile, the effort to recall City Councilmember Dan Rushing was succeeding, with 56.5% of voters supporting the recall after the final Election Night ballot drop. Ballot Measure G-24, which seeks to reset sewer rates, was passing with 65.6% of the vote as of 12:20 a.m.
The 2024 election has been heated in Grover Beach, mostly stemming from the City Council’s December 2023 decision to raise water and sewer rates to pay for the Central Coast Blue water sustainability project.
That decision led to a citizen-backed initiative spearheaded by mayoral candidate Debbie Peterson. It seeks to reset sewer rates to the 2021 rate structure level. It also triggered the campaign to recall Rushing, who voted to approve a higher rate structure to pay for the project.
According to the fourth and final Election Night ballot count release at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, with all precincts reporting, Dee had 41.7% of the vote — a slight lead over Peterson at 37.8%. That’s a margin of 117 votes. City Councilmember Robert Robert was third at 20.4%.
Dee told The Tribune early Tuesday night that she was feeling optimistic about the election results so far.
“I’m feeling really confident and just really excited,” Dee said at an Election Night party at Jimmy D’s Spaghetti Joint. “I think this is just the start of a really good thing, and I couldn’t be happier.”
If elected, Dee said she hopes to bring transparency, integrity and kindness to office.
“I think the city really needs a strong and positive leader,” she said
Meanwhile, in the race for the District 2 City Council seat, Kathy McCorry overtook Bolyanatz, receiving 51.1% of the vote to 48.9%
In District 4, Clint Weirick was unopposed and received 589 votes as of midnight.
By the end of Election Night, 3,244 ballots had been counted in the Grover Beach race, or around 40.8% of the registered voter population in the city.
The final ballot drop included mail-in ballots received up to the weekend before Election Day as well as ballots cast in person on Election Day.
