Dawn Addis holds on to big lead in SLO County Assembly district race
Morro Bay City Councilmember Dawn Addis held on to a strong lead in the District 30 Assembly race Wednesday morning.
As of 11 a.m., with 100% of precincts partially reporting, Addis led the race with 60.8% of the vote, while her Republican challenger, Vicki Nohrden, trailed with 39.2% of the vote.
The lead had Addis feeling “excited” and “very optimistic,” she told The Tribune late Tuesday.
“(I’m) honored by the number of people that voted for us, came out to volunteer for us, and grateful to the poll workers who are really the backbone of our democracy,” she added. “I’m looking forward, if I have the honor of being elected, definitely looking forward to serving the people of this district.”
Addis also noted that “this is a historic election for SLO County — it’s the first time in half a century that a Democrat will hold this seat,” and that the Democrat is from the county.
Addis is taking another run at an Assembly seat after losing to Jordan Cunningham by 10 points in 2020, before the district was redrawn with a more liberal slant. Cunningham held SLO County’s District 35 seat for six years before choosing not to run in 2022.
Nohrden, a Monterey County resident, also ran for office in previous years. She ran for California State Assembly in 2018 and California State Senate in 2020 — losing both times.
The new 2020 map split SLO County into two districts. Now, most voters live in District 30, while Nipomo joined Santa Barbara County in District 37.
As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, with 100% of precincts partially reporting, Democrat Gregg Hart led with 58% of the vote, followed by Republican Mike Stoker with 42% of the vote.
Hart, a Democrat, is a Santa Barbara County supervisor, while Stoker is a Republican small businessman from Santa Maria.
