Meet Airstream's most affordable travel trailer. Who should buy it?
Airstream is an American luxury travel trailer and camper brand that's known for producing some of the most comfortable and functional trailers and campers that money can buy.
Its Flying Cloud travel trailer is wildly popular, but the brand also produces smaller, more affordable options for buyers. Its newest travel trailer is the most affordable yet, and a great entry-point to the Airstream brand.
Here's what you need to know about Airstream's cheapest new trailer and who should consider owning it.
What is the Airstream World Traveler?
The Airstream World Traveler is a new travel trailer that starts at $64,400 before customizations, taxes and additional fees. It's available as a 17-foot trailer with a rear bath layout or a 22-foot trailer with a rear bath layout ($71,400).
Airstream World Traveler features
- Space-saving wet bath
- Convertible booth style dinette
- Rear primary bed
- Extendable mid-ship galley with storage
The Airstream World Traveler sleeps up to four. Its larger 22-foot configuration also sleeps up to four. The greatest difference between the two models is interior space.
Airstream offers several upgrades for the World Traveler including a dinette drawer refrigerator ($400), a 300-watt rooftop solar charging system ($3,000), and a built-in microwave ($350).
How much does the Airstream World Traveler weigh?
The 17-foot Airstream World Traveler has a gross vehicle weight rating of 3,500 pounds. It has a hitch weight of 375 pounds. Several midsize SUVs and trucks are designed to tow the World Traveler's weight when equipped with trailer tow packages. Even the Ford Maverick small pickup truck is capable of towing 4,000 pounds when equipped with Ford's 4K tow package.
Airstream's 22-foot World Traveler trailer requires more towing capacity and has a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,500 pounds. It has a hitch weight of 440 pounds, so you'll need a truck or SUV capable of towing at least 5,000 pounds to safely transport the larger model.
While the tiny Ford Maverick may not be capable of towing over 4,000 pounds, many midsize SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner and trucks like the Ford Ranger are designed to tow trailers like the 22-foot World Traveler.
Who should get an Airstream World Traveler?
The Airstream World Traveler is ideal for drivers who already own a vehicle capable of towing 3,500 to 5,000 pounds. It's a travel trailer for first-time Airstream buyers on a budget who want to regularly take trips and sleep inside the trailer.
It's smaller and easier to maneuver than other Airstream travel trailers, but it doesn't sacrifice the essentials for space. The World Traveler is a great choice for Americans interested in visiting one (or more) of America's 63 national parks during breaks or time off.
Modern nomads and retirees may prefer one of Airstream's larger, more well-equipped travel trailers like the Flying Cloud ($115,900) or the Classic ($195,400).
How long do Airstream trailers last?
Airstream travel trailers are capable of lasting for decades because of their aluminum shells. These shells don't rust, though seal issues could still lead to water damage.
Trailer appliances and components including the axles may need rebuilding or replacement every 15 to 20 years. Like passenger vehicles, travel trailers can stay on roads for years without any significant issues with proper maintenance and upkeep.
