A person died after plunging 150 feet from a steep Colorado rock face, spending much of it in a “free fall,” officials said.

Rescuers responded to the “tragic incident” in rugged terrain near Eagle Gate and Pine Valley Road on Thursday, July 24, Elk Creek Fire Department said in a post on Facebook. The area is southwest of Conifer, about a 30-mile drive southwest from Denver.

Officials didn’t say what the adult was doing in the area at the time of the fall.

Rescue crews recovered the person’s body in a “difficult high angle rope recovery operation” with support from three agencies.

Photos show the recovery mission over the steep rock ledge.

“Our hearts are with the victim’s loved ones during this incredibly painful time,” the agency said.
