Mail carrier robbed at gunpoint, Georgia cops say. 17-year-old, mom and uncle charged
A 17-year-old, his mother and uncle are charged in connection with a 2024 armed robbery of a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, deputies said.
The mail carrier was stopped by the 17-year-old and another teen, who was previously arrested, at about 5 p.m. Nov. 13 while making deliveries in Augusta, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said in a March 12 news release.
McClatchy News is not naming either teen because they are minors.
One of the teens pushed a pistol to the mail carrier’s chest, then the teens stole two items from him and ran away, deputies said. The items were not made known by deputies.
At that time, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service was offering a reward of up to $150,000 for information about the suspects.
The 17-year-old was charged with armed robbery and possession, according to the release.
The teen’s mother and uncle were also charged with giving false statements and harboring a fugitive, respectively, deputies said.
McClatchy News is not naming either adult to protect the identity of the teen.
“Some parents and others may think they are helping by covering for their loved ones, but in reality, they are enabling them — often leading to additional charges and further harm,” Sheriff Eugene Brantley said in the release.
Augusta is about a 145-mile drive southeast from Atlanta.
