17-year-old student athlete shot and killed while going to school with mom, PA cops say
A high school student was shot multiple times as he was leaving to go to school, Pennsylvania news outlets reported.
It was around 7:15 a.m. on Jan. 14 when the 17-year-old was leaving for school with his mom when he was gunned down, according to Philadelphia police as reported by WXTF.
Officers said the teen was found with “multiple gunshot wounds.” He was rushed to a hospital where he died around 7:40 a.m., police told McClatchy News.
No one has been arrested, and no weapons have been recovered, according to police.
The Samuel Fels High School student, identified as Noah Scurry, played on the boys basketball team and recently received a high score on the SAT test, the school’s principal said in an email shared with CBS Philadelphia.
“Death is rarely something that is easy to accept, especially when it involves a young person, a classmate, and particularly during these times as our city grapples with heightened gun violence,” Principal Melissa Rasper wrote in the email, according to WXTF.
The principal said all boys basketball games would be canceled for the rest of the week, according to WPVI.
“The School District of Philadelphia extends our deepest sympathies and heartfelt thoughts to the family and friends of the young Fels High School student, whose life was tragically cut short Tuesday morning. We condemn the senseless gun violence in Philadelphia that continues to have lasting impacts on our children and their families,” a spokesperson for the district said in an email to McClatchy News.
The Philadelphia Police Department said they are continuing to investigate the shooting.
