Man robs mail carrier at gunpoint, then other man shoots at agents in Illinois, feds say
Two Illinois men were charged after officials say one of them robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint, then his accomplice shot at agents.
Ahmel Holmes, 18, is charged with armed robbery of a postal carrier and Jesus Santillan, 19, is charged with using a deadly and dangerous weapon to assault postal inspectors and impede the performance of their official duties, according to a Jan. 13 news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.
McClatchy News reached out to attorneys for Holmes and Santillan on Jan. 14 but did not immediately hear back.
On Jan. 8, a postal worker was delivering mail in Harvey when Holmes went up to her with a gun and demanded her belongings, prosecutors said.
Holmes looked through her pockets, then demanded access to the postal vehicle, where he took a tub of mail, according to a criminal complaint.
After the robbery, two postal inspectors began searching the area and saw a man near an alley. When they tried to speak to the man, later identified as Santillan, he pointed a gun at them and began shooting, officials say.
The inspectors were not injured and did not fire back, officials say. They chased Santillan to a nearby home and arrested him. Holmes was also found at the residence and arrested, according to prosecutors.
The inspectors also found the tub of mail at the home, the complaint said.
Harvey is about a 25-mile drive south of Chicago.
