A woman lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds identified her accused shooter before she died, Kentucky police said.

Police responded to reports of shooting just after 1:15 p.m. Jan. 5 in Louisville and found the injured woman. She was then taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to court records.

Joshua M. Miller, 36, has been charged with murder, court documents said.

A witness, identified as the victim’s cousin, told officers that the “suspect was her ex-boyfriend whom she had just contacted in order to retrieve her belongings,” court documents said.

Earlier on Jan. 5, the two met with Miller, and he drove to a home. As the cousin walked in the home, she saw Miller fire a gun several times, according to court documents.

Miller then fled the scene, court documents said.

Police treated the woman as she told them the accused shooter’s first and last name, age and address before she was taken to the hospital where she died, court documents said.

Later, Miller returned to the scene of the shooting and shot at officers, court documents said.

While on the way to the hospital, body camera footage recorded Miller telling an officer, “If they ask you, I wasn’t sorry for it. I was trying to kill that (expletive).”

Miller was arrested and appeared in court on Jan. 6.
