Driver accused of running over and killing 3-year-old is then shot at, Oklahoma cops say
Tensions flared in the parking lot of an Oklahoma apartment complex after authorities say a 3-year-old was run over and killed.
The Tulsa Police Department said the toddler ran into the path of a moving car and was struck around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Bradford Apartments.
Police said the victim, a boy, was dragged 5 to 10 feet by the car, KOKI reported.
The 3-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to police. The identity of the child has not been publicly disclosed as of Oct. 23.
After the accident, police said “emotions were high” as multiple people approached the driver and threatened him.
When the driver left the scene and called 911, his car was shot at, according to police. He was uninjured in the barrage of gunfire.
Police said the driver returned once officers arrived at the apartment complex. Officers found no evidence the driver was impaired.
The driver was believed to have been traveling 25 to 30 mph, KOTV reported, a speed police considered “reasonable.”
“This was a horrible, tragic event, and when you add gun violence to that, no good comes from it. It just gets worse,” Tulsa Police Capt. Matt Arnold told KOTV. “It just compounds a tragedy.”
No charges are being filed against the driver, police said. An investigation is ongoing to determine possible charges against the accused shooter.
