Longtime school worker dies while working in well near football field, NE cops say
The maintenance supervisor of a Nebraska school district died as he worked to resolve an issue at a high school, authorities say.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to Elkhorn North High School on Wednesday, Sept. 4, regarding an “industrial accident.”
Kevin Garrison, 50, was working in the geothermal well near the school’s football field when he became unresponsive, according to the school district.
Deputies said Garrison was fatally injured. His cause of death is under investigation, but the sheriff’s department said asphyxia is suspected.
Garrison was a “dedicated” employee with Elkhorn Public Schools, having worked for the district for 20 years, officials said.
“Our deepest condolences go to the Garrison family, including Kevin’s wife, Deb, current EPS principal, and his daughters Nikki and Rachel, current EPS teacher,” the school district said.
Deputies said an investigation is ongoing.
Elkhorn is about a 20-mile drive west from Omaha.
