It’s been a long time coming, but one dog is finally getting his happy ending at a Ohio animal shelter, and all his caregivers are celebrating it in a special — and tearful — way.

Buddy spent 511 days at the SPCA Cincinnati shelter, his life being chronicled by social media posts, photos and tears. But the big guy’s world was turned around Aug. 12, according to a happy Facebook post.

“If you’ve been a part of our Facebook family for a while, you already know the story of Buddy,” the shelter said. “Today was a very special day not only for our humane society, but most importantly for Buddy and his new pet parents!”

The video shows very emotional, yet happy, staff greeting Buddy one final time as his new parents come to spring him out of the shelter. They even made a special cake for him to celebrate his “gotcha day,” as his new mom sheds tears of happiness.

“We can confirm that Buddy has found his forever home in the ideal care designed perfectly for him,” the shelter said. “Thank you for all of your support (from inside the SPCA - medical, kennel, foster team & volunteer teams to our community making recommendations & spreading the news of this precious boy), all those routing for Buddy that led him to his #HappyGotchaDay.”
