A Michigan man is accused of torturing and imprisoning a 58-year-old woman over a drug debt, officials said.

Darren John Dawson, 34, of Clinton Township, is charged with torture, unlawful imprisonment and larceny, according to an Aug. 8 news release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

McClatchy News reached out to Dawson’s attorney Aug. 8 for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Officials said Dawson tortured the woman, held her against her will for six months and kept her in a closet in his apartment over a drug debt. Additional details about the debt were not available.

During this time, Dawson also stole the woman’s Social Security money and food stamps, officials said.

“The victim endured unimaginable suffering in what can only be described as a living nightmare,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said.

Dawson’s bond was set at $1 million, officials said. He is due in court for a probable cause hearing on Aug. 20.

Clinton Township is about a 30-mile drive northeast from Detroit.
