Grandma walking with kids dies after she’s hit by SUV and truck, cops and family say
A grandmother walking down the street with two kids was killed after being hit first by an SUV backing out of a driveway, then again by a passing truck, Ohio troopers and the woman’s family said.
The fatal crash happened at about 11:30 a.m. July 8, according to a news release from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Investigators said 72-year-old Linda Dowalter of Bellville was walking down the sidewalk with a 2-year-old and a 7-year-old when she was struck by a Ford Escape backing out of a private driveway.
The SUV driver was identified as an 85-year-old woman from Marion, officials said.
Dowalter and the SUV were then struck by a Kenworth T480 medium-duty truck, according to investigators.
Authorities said Dowalter “sustained fatal injuries at the scene.”
The 2-year-old had minor injuries and the 7-year-old was unharmed, troopers said.
“On her last day, she saved … her great-grandaughter,” Dowalter’s family said in a July 9 Facebook post. Her family said the children are “still here because of her.”
The driver and passenger of the SUV were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to authorities.
Authorities said the crash is still under investigation.
Marion is about a 50-mile drive north from Columbus.
