A Texas man grabbed a shotgun and fended off a dog attack that left his 85-year-old sister dead, officials told news outlets.

Deputies responded to a home in Monte Alto at about 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, in response to a reported animal attack, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office told KVEO.

They arrived to find an injured woman lying on the ground behind the house, with wounds to her neck and head, the station reported.

The woman’s brother told investigators that he heard screaming outside shortly after she went outside to feed her two dogs, and he saw the dogs mauling his sister, MyRGV.com reported.

He tried to get the dogs off of her, but when he approached they tried to attack him as well, officials told the outlet. The man shot and killed one of the dogs with a shotgun, causing the other to run away, according to investigators.

Officials say the woman was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries, KRGV reported.

Deputies are working with animal control to find the second dog, according to the station.

Monte Alto is a roughly 230-mile drive south from San Antonio.
