Mischief seems to follow a sweet dog, and one Texas shelter is determined to find a loving home for the clever black and white escape artist.

The Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area posted a plea on Facebook on May 22 on behalf of Peepers, a dog who has been in and out of the shelter a few times before, but has been stuck there for six weeks this time around.

“We aren’t giving up on this dog — even though so many others have tried and failed, we are still holding out hope for PEEPERS,” the post said.

“We first met Peepers in January of 2021. He had two more visits and was reclaimed a total of three times. The last time he showed up, his owner never came to get him. He was adopted but managed to escape two more times and was reclaimed twice but the third time he was not.

“That was nearly two months ago and since he’s been back he has not had a single inquiry.”

The shelter noted that Peepers’ disappearing acts tell “us more about his caretakers than it does about the dog … we can only assume Peepers was not getting the mental and physical stimulation he needed to stay put.”

While at the shelter, the pup has been a dream to the staff despite going through some issues like a skin condition that required medicated baths, which is all healed now.

“Peepers is an older dude, we are guessing around 6,” the shelter said. “He’s only about 45 pounds and a dream on the leash, he also has a lot to say, which may turn folks off who see him in his kennel but out on the leash he’s so friendly and easy going, seems to really enjoy other dogs and just soaking in the sunshine and feeling the grass between his toes.”

The post goes on to plead with the public in a final attempt to give Peepers a new lease on life.

“Peepers has already been here over 6 weeks and we fear without an adopter or foster home stepping up SOON, this may be his last stop. We are getting new dogs in EVERY DAY and have run out of places to put them. .... we need some folks willing to take a chance on dogs like Peepers and step up to save their life.”

New Braunfels is about a 35-mile drive northeast from San Antonio.
