A man won a big Powerball prize in Washington, but his family didn’t believe him when he texted a photo of the ticket.

The IT infrastructure manager from Everett scored $50,000, Washington’s Lottery said in an Aug. 2 news release. Lottery officials didn’t release his full name.

He told lottery officials he paid $10 for a lottery ticket when the jackpot was over $1 billion.

When he scanned his ticket, his screen showed “See Lottery Office,” and he realized he won a big prize.

The lucky player sent a photo of his ticket to his family, but his sister thought it was Photoshopped, lottery officials said.

So he sent a photo of his $50,000 check with his name on it.

That’s when she believed him. “You aren’t joking, are you?” she said.

He put $25,000 in savings and gave the rest to his family.

Everett is about 30 miles north of Seattle.

What to know about Powerball

To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1-in-292,201,338.

Tickets cost $2 and can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
