An argument in Central Park between two dog owners ended with the stabbing of a woman’s dog, according to reports and police in New York City.

The dog had to be euthanized at a clinic following the violent encounter in the park the evening of June 17, an NYPD spokesperson confirmed in a statement to McClatchy News on June 19. Officers did not specify what led to the argument.

Around 8:30 p.m., the woman was walking Eli, a 14-year-old pit bull-German Shepherd mix and her other dog Sadie, a miniature pinscher, with her husband when they came across a man with three dogs in the park, NYPD Officer Antonio Antenucci told CNN.

After one of the man’s dogs tried to bite Sadie, an argument ensued and the man let go of all his dogs’ leashes, resulting in them attacking Eli, according to CNN.

At some point, the man pulled out a switchblade and stabbed Eli, WABC-TV reported.

He fled the park following the stabbing, according to the NYPD spokesperson.

No arrests have been made as of the evening of June 19 as an investigation is underway, the spokesperson said.

An exclusive video obtained by WABC-TV shows one of Eli’s owners walking after the suspect shouting “You killed my dog.”

A witness who saw Eli after the attack spoke with CBS New York and described the dog’s injuries.

“You could tell the dog was injured. It was bleeding out,” they told the outlet. “There was a lot of blood on the floor, but besides that, the owner was distraught. His wife couldn’t come close to the dog because there was too much blood on the floor.”
