A typically “reclusive” creature wandered to a Washington transportation facility and was caught hanging out on the roof in what officials called a “rare” sighting.

A bobcat was spotted resting on a maintenance facility’s rooftop at about 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, in Mount Vernon, Washington State Department of Transportation spokesperson RB McKeon told McClatchy News by email.

“They thought it was a rare opportunity to capture a photo so close,” McKeon said.

Workers backed away slowly and snapped photos of the bobcat from a safe distance, McKeon said.

The animal ran off a short time later.

“You never know who might drop by for a visit at our maintenance facilities. In other news, the Mount Vernon Maintenance Facility now belongs to this bobcat,” the department wrote on Facebook.

Workers had never seen a bobcat in this area before, McKeon. They typically see deer, ducks and rabbits.

But the facility is near Little Mountain Park, a 522-acre park, so McKeon said they suspected the bobcat wandered down from the forested area.

Bobcats are common in suburban areas in Washington, but they are not typically spotted because of their “reclusive ways,” according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Mount Vernon is about 60 miles north of Seattle.
