10-year-old helps mom deliver her new baby sister weeks early, Missouri officials say
When a 10-year-old girl’s mom went into labor about three weeks early, she was asked to call 911 for help.
“What happened next was nothing but sheer awesomeness,” North County Fire & Rescue said in a Nov. 16 Facebook post.
With guidance from a Missouri dispatcher, Miracle Moore began coaching her mother through a painful at-home delivery early Oct. 23, according to KSDK.
“Miracle followed all of the instructions given to her over the phone, and when mom didn’t cooperate, she broke out her own ‘mom voice,’” officials said.
Before first responders could arrive at the Jennings home, her newest baby sister, Jayla, had been born. But the big sister’s work didn’t stop there.
“Miracle was there with a towel to wipe off her face and to help stimulate her to cry and keep her warm until paramedics arrived,” according to the fire department.
“It was definitely a miracle because once I had the baby, she came out, I couldn’t really grab her and pick her up and then Miracle came and she wrapped her up in a towel,” mother Viola Fair told KSDK. “She wiped her off and rubbed her back a little bit so she could cry. So, she was really helpful. I am very thankful.”
Trained help arrived a few minutes later to take the mom and her newborn daughter to the hospital “safe and sound,” authorities said.
Miracle was recently recognized as a “local HERO,” where she earned a pink stork pin that is typically bestowed upon EMS workers who deliver a baby in the field. She and her family also received some special gifts.
“This beautiful family of four certainly has a great story to tell over the holidays,” officials said.
Jennings is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area.
