Video from national park captures Milky Way and Northern Lights — at the same time

Looking for something to do while socially distancing? An Alaska national park has an idea.

The Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve went stargazing in mid-March and captured something rare — and stunning.

On the night of March 19, heading into March 20, the park captured a video of the Milky Way and Northern Lights at the same time.

“Stargazing... Social distancing-approved activity,” the park said. “#Timelapse video: Milky Way, stars, and aurora just outside Gustavus, AK. Footage from last night, March 19-20.”

A few nights earlier, the Alaska national park shared on Instagram that it had been “socked in with clouds for much of the winter.”

“Hoping to glimpse this classic Alaskan sight: The northern lights, or aurora borealis,” the park said. “When solar activity is high, the chance of seeing this incredible phenomenon improves in Glacier Bay.”
