Wildfire burns more than 400 acres near SLO County border
A fire burning near the southern border of San Luis Obispo County blew past the 400-acre mark Wednesday morning.
Initially detected at around 5:18 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Foothill Road and Kirschenmann Road in Cuyama, the blaze that would later be dubbed the Foothill Fire reached an estimated 462 acres as of around 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to a post on X from Cal Fire.
The fire was around 10% contained as of Wednesday morning, drawing around 200 fire personnel to the area, Cal Fire said.
“Weather conditions remain warm with the potential for shifting winds this afternoon,” the post read. “Firefighters remain prepared for changing fire conditions throughout the operational period.”
Several roads were closed and evacuations ordered for zones SBC-177 and SBC-185, while evacuation warnings were issued for zone SBC-187, according to the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Services.
These evacuation zones comprise the areas north of Castro Canyon and Big Pine Mountain, east of Perkins Road, south of the Cuyama Valley, and west of the Cuyama River and Highway 33.
Of note to San Luis Obispo County residents, zone SBC-177 runs along Highway 166 on the southern border of the county, just south of the border of the Carrizo Plain National Monument.
