Bear caught on video strolling through SLO County yard. ‘I was shocked’

A bear wandered into a yard in Arroyo Grande on Wednesday — surprising the people who lived here.

Gary Borsos was preparing for dinner at 5:30 p.m. when he got an alert from his Ring Camera. He peered out his front window, saw brown fur and assumed it was a dog.

But when he took a closer look, he realized it was a bear.

“I was shocked,” he said.

The bear had walked along his front porch and headed west toward his neighbor’s house.

He called his neighbors to warn them, then he called 911.

Eventually, the bear jumped the fence and strolled into Borsos’ backyard.

When the police arrived, they flew a drone toward the bear — which spooked it, and it climbed into a large pepper tree.

The bear sat in the tree for about an hour, Borsos said.

As a precaution, the Arroyo Grande Police Department ordered the neighborhood to shelter in place while they dealt with the bear, Borsos said. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to the incident, too.

Eventually, the bear climbed out of the tree on its own and left the yard by 7:30 p.m., Borsos said.

He said the incident was handled “just right.”

“Nobody got harmed, the bear didn’t get harmed, it all turned out well,” he said.

The Arroyo Grande Police Department did not immediately respond to The Tribune’s request for comment.
