Boulders tumble off Morro Rock onto trail below. What happened?

A handful of boulders tumbled down Morro Rock onto a trail below during Monday’s rainstorm.

As of Friday morning, two boulders about the size of office chairs and other smaller rocks sat on a trail on the south side of the Rock, according to State Parks San Luis Obispo Coast District Chief Ranger Eric Hjelstrom.

When the tractor is available early next week, Hjelstrom said, State Parks maintenance employees will push the boulders out of the road to the base of Morro Rock.

Hjelstrom said it’s common for boulders to fall off the Rock during weather events — that’s why so many boulders have collected at the base.

“It’s just Mother Nature doing its thing,” he said.
