Earth First! founder Dave Foreman to speak in SLO
Environmental activist and author Dave Foreman will give a fireside talk next week in San Luis Obispo.
He will speak Oct. 21 as part of the Deep Ecology Collaboratory, a three-day gathering aimed at exploring issues such as biodiversity, overpopulation and globalization. It runs Oct. 21 through 23 at the Rancho El Chorro Conference and Retreat Center.
Named one of Audubon magazine’s “100 Champions of Conservation of the 20th Century,” Foreman worked as a lobbyist for environmental causes in Washington, D.C., before founding the radical environmental activism group Earth First! He cofounded what is now known as the Wildlands Network, which seeks to protect wilderness areas across North America.
Foreman now heads The Rewilding Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on large-scale conservation.
Foreman is the author of eight books, including 2004’s “Rewilding North America: A Vision for Conservation in the 21st Century.”
Other people scheduled to speak at the Deep Ecology Collaboratory include researcher Robert Gifford and authors Eileen Crist and Derrick Jensen.
Conference registration costs $60 to $150 per day, and closes at midnight Monday. For more information, visit http://ecologistics.org/deep-ecology-collaboratory/.
